The John Laird Centre
Nadim Associates Solicitors and Stanton Marine Limited have offices in the John Laird Centre, Birkenhead. The building dates from 1871 and was Britain’s first purpose built Art School.
The land, construction and running costs were provided by John Laird, the son of William Laird, the Scottish Philanthropist famous for founding modern Birkenhead and founder of the well known British Shipyard, Cammel Lairds Ltd.
The building was constructed at a cost of £1,600 sterling and was completed on 31st March 1871, by the builders Alex Bleakley & Co., to a design by the architects J. M. Hay & Co.
In 1993 the building was acquired and completely renovated and refurbished to become the headquarters of Stanton Marine Ltd and was completed on the 28th May 1993. Carl Thompson Associates were retained as the architects and the Warwick Construction Group undertook the building work.
The building was officially opened as the Stanton Marine Ltd head office on 11th June 1993 by the Right Honourable Baroness Chalker of Wallasey, Minister of State for Overseas Development, Africa and the Commonwealth.
